This optional enhancement, available across select Tundra trims and configurations, adds an extra layer of excitement to Toyota’s popular model. For drivers seeking more power without altering the truck’s established profile, the TRD Performance package delivers a noticeable increase in output, complemented by a distinctive exhaust note. Understanding the TRD Performance Package Toyota isn’t making a major fuss about this update, but the TRD Performance package is designed to squeeze more power from the Tundra’s twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine. This package incorporates a new engine calibration that works in tandem with intake and exhaust modifications to produce an additional 29 horsepower from the hybrid powertrain, resulting in a combined output of 466 horsepower. While the peak torque remains unchanged at 583 pound-feet, the improved horsepower delivery makes a tangible difference during acceleration. The hybrid configuration comes standard on the TRD Pro and other high-end trims. However, the package is also available on non-hybrid Tundras, adding 32 horsepower, as well as the hybrid-only Sequoia SUV. Previously, we put a Sequoia with these upgrades through our testing gauntlet, and now it’s the Tundra’s turn to demonstrate its enhanced capabilities. Subtle Visual Cues Given the TRD Pro’s already distinctive styling, the TRD Performance package is easy to miss. A small TRD Performance badge on the lower left corner of the embossed tailgate serves as the only visual indicator. The truck’s design avoids excess graphics, ensuring that the performance upgrade remains understated. Inside the engine bay, you’ll find TRD-branded airboxes, each connected to its own turbocharger, subtly announcing the enhanced performance. Improved Exhaust and Airflow Helping the 3.4-liter engine breathe better is a cat-back exhaust system. This system features a TRD-styled single tip that replaces the standard Pro’s dual circular outlets. The trapezoidal shape of this new piece echoes the grille’s geometry, fitting perfectly with the Tundra’s overall aesthetic. Like the rest of the truck, it’s robust and functional. This serves as a reminder that the extra power requires premium fuel, which might increase the operating cost. However, the modest upgrades do not appear to negatively impact fuel economy. Our testing recorded an average of 15 mpg, consistent with previous Tundra performance figures. Pump Up the Volume With this setup, the peak power occurs at 5200 rpm, while max torque—unchanged at 479 pound-feet—is delivered 400 rpm sooner. Compared to an unmodified Tundra TRD Pro, the TRD Performance truck was 0.1 second quicker to 60 mph, the same delta as with the Sequoia, with a 5.6-second result. Bigger gains are seen in the rolling-start metric, with this test truck going from 5 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, 0.3 second quicker than stock. Its 14.2-second run through the quarter-mile at 97 mph is quicker and faster, by 0.3 second again and 5 mph. If you’re looking for more power, you may need to seek out a warranty-voiding aftermarket solution to provide a bigger output bump, of which there are several. HIGHS: Quicker than stock in every test, no fuel economy penalty, a visually stealthy upgrade. With all that gas-mashing, the exhaust note can be, well, exhausting. The performance cat-back system is only an improvement if your goal is loudness. At wide-open throttle, it’s the same 80 decibels as the standard TRD Pro, but the tonal quality is pretty drone-y on the highway, which gets old quick. At a 70-mph cruising speed, the performance exhaust sends 70 decibels into the cabin, three more than the standard setup. Compared to the exhaust that comes on the TRD Performance-ified Sequoia—only the center exhaust pipe is replaced there, taking it from 65 to 70 decibels—it’s more noticeable but less appealing. And even with the exhaust upgrade, Toyota continues to pipe in faux engine noise that can’t be turned off. LOWS: Aftermarket tuners coax more from this V-6, makes loud louder, will people know it’s special? The tune does nothing to improve the Tundra transmission’s occasional lumpy shifts. At part throttle, the unit is busy running up through its 10 gears, and with your foot to the floor, gearchanges come fast and furious, but not in a good way. This is one area where the domestic half-tons have a palpable advantage. While they eat into an already tight back seat in the Taco, the Tundra CrewMax offers more space, and we got no complaints from our rear-seat occupants—just questions about why there are bike pumps on the back of the front chairs. The TRD Performance pack is available on select Tundra trims and configurations, setting you back an extra $2999. It’s a more reasonable $2299 for the Sequoia, which makes a more reasonable amount of noise. If you simply want your TRD Pro to shout, however, this is the mod package for you. VERDICT: More power is nice, but the Sequoia with this package ups performance without the yelling.
