Full Video : #Cops #Code3Response #BackupArrived part 2 Dial R for Raucous: Welcoming Our Long-Term 2026 Volkswagen Golf R Over the Next 40,000 Miles, We’ll Discover Just How Much We Miss That Six-Speed Manual Transmission Published: Apr 2, 2026 2026 Volkswagen Golf R View Exterior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Introduction The Volkswagen Golf R needs no introduction around these parts—though its transmission might. After securing yet another spot on our revered 10Best list, alongside its sportier GTI sibling, a 2026 Golf R has joined our stable for 40,000 miles of driving enjoyment. However, it appears there might be some initial hurdles to overcome. We’ll start with the price. The base price for the Golf R is a steep $50,730, but of course, we’re never content to leave things basic. The only new option for the 2026 model year is a $455 Graphite Gray Metallic paint job, so we decided to coat ours in that hue, which remarkably matches the sky above our Ann Arbor headquarters as winter stubbornly refuses to yield to spring. View Interior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver We also opted for the $3795 Euro Style package, which, contrary to expectations, did not include Gauloises cigarettes or an Armani Exchange tracksuit but did swap the standard (and rather dull) all-black power leather seats for a set featuring blue-plaid cloth inserts while limiting electronic intervention to the recline function. The door panels also received different inserts. The package also deletes the sunroof and front-seat ventilation, yet it adds an AkrapoviÄŤ titanium axle-back exhaust system. It’s difficult to configure a less expensive option, but still: A $54,980 window sticker for a Volkswagen hot hatch is a tough pill to swallow. Last year brought an additional 13 horsepower for a total output of 328 ponies, although torque remains at 295 pound-feet. The exterior received a slight refresh—hooray, more LED light bars—and the infotainment screen grew in both size and capability. However, 2025 also marked the discontinuation of the Golf R’s six-speed manual transmission, leaving only the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) available. You can’t win them all, but having an automatic Golf R is better than having no Golf R, we suppose. Even in the car’s most sedate drive mode, the DSG acts aggressively when we lift off the brakes, lunging forward with the grace of a 16-year-old’s first encounter with a manual transmission. Switching to Sport mode slightly increases the idle and, consequently, the transmission’s aggressiveness in said lurching. It can be managed to some degree, but only with the most delicate touch. We’ll see if anything can be done about that. We’re also investigating a spare tire, or rather, its absence. The Golf R comes only with an emergency inflation kit, and given our luck with tires (and our state’s terrible pavement conditions) we’d prefer to avoid a flat tire. The space between the trunk’s load floor and the subwoofer beneath it isn’t large enough to fit even a space-saver spare, so the only solution we’ve considered so far is to purchase a fifth wheel and tire and keep it in the back during road trips—which isn’t ideal since road trips usually involve carrying both passengers and cargo. View Exterior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver The DSG performed satisfactorily at the test track. Wearing a set of 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza S005 summer tires, our Golf R accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a launch-control-enabled 4.0 seconds flat, though its 5-to-60 mph time increased to 5.1 seconds. The quarter-mile was completed in a respectable 12.5 seconds at 111 mph. Despite being tested in Michigan’s typical poor March weather, the Bridgestones helped the Golf R maintain 0.99 g of grip on the skidpad. Braking wasn’t bad either, with stops from 70 mph taking 152 feet and stops from 100 mph taking 299 feet. Excitement is hard to come by in this region at this time of year, so the Golf R has us eager for warmer weather and the all-wheel-drive adventures that come with it. You know what else is hard to come by? An OEM replacement windshield, because ours is already cracked, but that’s a story for our next update. Hopefully.
