Introduction
The Volkswagen Golf R has cemented its place among the elite hot hatchbacks, and its arrival in our long-term fleet for 2026 has only solidified its reputation. After 40,000 miles, it continues to impress with its balance of performance, technology, and everyday usability. While some of the early teething pains we experienced persist, the Golf R remains a standout choice for buyers seeking a premium compact car with AWD capability.
Initial impressions focused heavily on the DSG transmission. While still aggressive in its most sedate drive mode, we discovered workarounds that effectively smooth out the transmission’s engagement. The lack of a spare tire remains a point of contention, but given the vehicle’s performance-oriented nature, this is a minor trade-off for many.

We opted for the Euro Style package, which includes a Golf R AkrapoviÄŤ titanium axle-back exhaust system and leather seats with blue-plaid inserts. While the price is steep, the performance gains and interior upgrades justify the added cost for those seeking an enhanced driving experience.

The DSG performs admirably at the test track. In 0–60 mph testing, the Golf R recorded a launch-control-enabled 4.0 seconds, with a 5–60 mph time of 5.1 seconds. The quarter-mile was completed in 12.5 seconds at 111 mph. The 300-foot skidpad result of 0.99 g demonstrates impressive grip, and braking performance is solid.
We tested the Golf R with its optional Bridgestone Potenza S005 summer tires. At the test track, the Golf R achieved 0–60 mph in 4.0 seconds, 5–60 mph in 5.1 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 12.5 seconds at 111 mph. These figures are competitive for the hot hatchback segment, and the Bridgestones provide excellent grip, allowing for impressive handling and cornering capabilities.

While the 2026 model year brings some minor tweaks, the changes from 2025 include an additional 13 horsepower for a total of 328 ponies, with torque remaining at 295 lb-ft. The Golf R’s infotainment system also received an upgrade. The Golf R’s 40,000-mile long-term test will reveal just how much we’ll miss that six-speed manual transmission.
