Introduction
The 2026 Volkswagen Golf R has become a legendary name among enthusiasts who appreciate performance, precision engineering, and a touch of European luxury. Having recently added a Golf R to our long-term fleet, we are eager to explore what this 328-horsepower hot hatch truly offers over the next 40,000 miles. But as we begin this journey, we must confront a truth that may challenge traditional enthusiasts: the loss of the manual transmission.
The price tag on the Golf R is immediately noticeable, starting at $50,730. We decided to equip ours with the $3,795 Euro Style package and the $455 Graphite Gray Metallic paint. This configuration upgrades the seat upholstery to a stylish blue plaid with ArtVelours seat bolsters, while also including an AkrapoviÄŤ titanium exhaust system. However, this package also deletes the panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats, a curious trade-off for a hot hatch aimed at sporty driving enthusiasts.

While the 2026 model received only minor updates from the 2025 version, those changes remain significant for the current model year. The Golf R gains an additional 13 horsepower, bringing the total to 328 hp, while torque remains steady at 295 lb-ft. The exterior received a minor refresh, and the infotainment system grew in size and capability. However, 2025 also marked the departure of the Golf R’s six-speed manual transmission, leaving the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) as the only option. For fans of manual transmissions, this may be a disappointment, but for many drivers, the automatic transmission offers superior performance and convenience.

Initial impressions of the Golf R’s DSG transmission have been mixed. In the most sedate drive mode, the DSG can feel aggressive, lurching forward as the driver lifts off the brakes. Even in Sport mode, the transmission’s aggressiveness increases slightly. It can be mitigated with careful driving, but it remains a point of focus for our long-term review.
We are also exploring the option of adding a spare tire. The Golf R comes with an emergency inflation kit, but given the poor pavement conditions in Michigan, we prefer a spare. Since the area under the trunk floor cannot accommodate even a space-saver, we are considering a fifth wheel and tire for long journeys—a solution that is less than ideal, but better than being stranded with a flat.

The DSG performed satisfactorily at the test track. Wearing 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza S005 summer tires, our Golf R accelerated to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 111 mph. Despite being tested in Michigan’s winter weather, the Bridgestones provided excellent grip, holding 0.99 g on the skidpad. Braking performance was also impressive, with 70-mph stops occurring in 152 feet.
Winter in Michigan can be challenging for high-performance vehicles, but we are looking forward to warmer weather and the opportunity to experience the Golf R’s all-wheel-drive capabilities. Unfortunately, winter has already claimed one victory: our Golf R suffered a cracked windshield during the first two months of ownership, a common issue with high-performance cars driven in less-than-ideal conditions.
