Full Video : #DashcamCaught #SuspectInCustody #TaserDeployed part 2 The 2026 Volkswagen Golf R: Initial Observations of a 40,000-Mile Test Drive The Volkswagen Golf R returns to our fleet for a 40,000-mile long-term test, continuing its legacy as a high-performance hot hatch. This iteration joins the ranks after yet another appearance on our 10Best list, reaffirming its position alongside the GTI. However, the initial rollout has been marked by a few hiccups, particularly concerning the drivetrain. We begin by addressing the price point. The Golf R starts at a substantial $50,730. As is often the case, we opted for several packages to enhance the experience. The Graphite Gray Metallic paint job, priced at $455, was selected to complement the gloomy Ann Arbor spring. We also chose the Euro Style package for $3,795. This package replaces the standard black leather seats with cloth upholstery featuring blue plaid inserts and alters the door panels accordingly. It also deletes the sunroof and front seat ventilation but adds an Akrapovič titanium axle-back exhaust. Despite the modifications, the total cost of $54,980 for a Volkswagen hot hatch is a significant investment. The changes for the 2026 model year are relatively minor, but the updates from 2025 remain. The Golf R received a 13-horsepower boost to 328 hp, though torque remains at 295 lb-ft. The exterior has been subtly updated, including the addition of more LED lighting elements, and the infotainment screen has been enlarged and enhanced. However, the 2025 introduction of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG) as the only option replaced the manual gearbox. While we prefer a manual transmission, we are pleased to have a Golf R available at all. Initial impressions of the DSG have been mixed. Even in the most subdued drive mode, the transmission acts aggressively when releasing the brakes, lurching forward in a manner reminiscent of a beginner driver’s first attempt with a manual. Switching to Sport mode increases the idle speed and exacerbates the lurching, which can only be slightly mitigated with delicate throttle control. We will continue to investigate potential solutions for this issue. We are also addressing the lack of a spare tire. The Golf R comes equipped with only an emergency tire inflation kit. Given our history with tires and the poor condition of Michigan’s roads, we plan to add a spare. The storage area beneath the trunk floor is insufficient to accommodate even a compact spare tire, leading us to consider carrying a fifth wheel and tire during long journeys—a less than ideal solution considering the need for cargo space on road trips. At the test track, the DSG performed satisfactorily. Equipped with Bridgestone Potenza S005 summer tires, the Golf R achieved 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds with launch control engaged, while the 5-to-60 mph time increased to 5.1 seconds. The quarter-mile was completed in 12.5 seconds at 111 mph. Despite being tested in the typical poor March weather conditions of Michigan, the Bridgestones allowed the Golf R to maintain a 0.99 g grip on the skidpad. Braking performance was also acceptable, with 70-to-0 mph stops in 152 feet and 100-to-0 mph stops in 299 feet. Given the lack of excitement during this time of year, we eagerly anticipate warmer weather and the opportunity to push the all-wheel-drive capabilities of the Golf R. We also hope to address the replacement of our windshield, which is already cracked—a story for our next update, we hope. | Months in Fleet | Current Mileage | Average Fuel Economy | Fuel Tank Size | Observed Fuel Range | Service | Normal Wear | Repair | Damage and Destruction |\n|—|—|—|—|—|—|—|—|—|\n| 2 | 2,252 | 23 mpg | 14.5 gallons | 330 miles | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |” } ]
