Meet Our Long-Term Ford Ranger Raptor Published: April 7, 2026 Verified Reviewed by Eric Stafford Managing Editor, News Save Article 2026 Ford Ranger Raptor Supercab Long-TermView exterior photos Marc Urbano|Car and Driver Introduction The Raptor formula from Ford has scarcely changed since the original F-150 version launched itself onto the scene back in 2010. Early press photos of an SVT Raptor taking flight could have been pulled straight from a Dukes of Hazzard episode. The Blue Oval’s street-legal desert racer went on to become a massive hit, spawning Raptors across multiple F-150 generations and eventually giving birth to similarly robust variants of both the Bronco and the Ranger. The F-150 Raptor and the Ranger Raptor share the same fundamental components—wider stances, long-travel suspensions, and high-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 engines—but the Ranger Raptor doesn’t break the bank quite as much. Its incredible value among comparable trucks earned it two consecutive 10Best awards, and our office is excited to put 40,000 miles on this mid-size pickup we’ve affectionately nicknamed the Michigan Miata. view exterior photos Marc Urbano|Car and Driver The first-generation Ranger Raptor was a forbidden fruit reserved exclusively for overseas markets, but Ford wisely decided to let Americans have a taste of this truck for its second generation, which debuted for the 2024 model year. Think of this vehicle as a Bronco Raptor without the 37-inch tires, convertible roof, or easily detachable doors. If you can make do without those admittedly desirable features, you’ll save around $23,000. Furthermore, the 2026 Ranger Raptor’s base price of $58,965 actually undercuts direct rivals like the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, which starts above $66,000. Sure, you can get a new Chevy Colorado ZR2 for under $53K, but you’ll be stuck with a 310-hp turbo four-cylinder engine (even on the much more expensive ZR2 Bison). And let’s not forget that the Ranger Raptor already outperformed both the TRD Pro and the ZR2 Bison in our off-road comparisons. For Sale Near You See all results for new 2026 Ford Ranger Raptor for sale near 63606 We selected the best available color for this model year: Shelter Green Metallic, a $395 option that strikes a sophisticated balance without being too loud. We passed on the racy rear-body decals (costing $750), since none of us are huge Monster Energy drinkers or sport tribal tattoos. We also stuck with the standard 17-inch wheels instead of the $1,495 forged beadlock-capable rollers, as we intend to test a set of aftermarket wheels during the truck’s extended road test. After choosing the spray-in bed liner ($525), a dealer-installed keyless entry pad ($230), and a three-year subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio ($300), our baby Raptor reached a total of $60,415. That’s still more than $20,000 cheaper than the F-150 Raptor’s admission price. Plus, it’s more likely to fit in garages designed for lower-profile sedans. While the Raptor shares its 128.7-inch wheelbase and five-foot cargo bed with the standard Ford Ranger, its front and rear tracks are 3.5 inches wider to accommodate the standard 33-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires. However, since the Raptor’s flared bodywork doesn’t exceed 80 inches in width, it doesn’t legally require three amber running lights like its larger, lane-dominating counterparts. Don’t make the mistake of thinking the Ranger is a watered-down version of the Raptor, because it certainly isn’t. It features steel bumpers on either end of a fully boxed ladder frame, and extensive underbody armor shields crucial components like the electronically locking front and rear differentials. Its robust suspension system is also engineered to handle rough conditions. The Ranger Raptor’s front wheels are supported by 2.5-inch Fox Live Valve adaptive dampers, which are paired with longer forged aluminum control arms. The rear Fox shocks have piggyback-style reservoirs that help dissipate heat more effectively when the solid rear axle is pushed to its limits. Additionally, Ford replaced the standard Ranger’s rear leaf springs and Panhard rod with coil springs and a more advanced Watt’s linkage with trailing arms, which enhances the truck’s roll stiffness. view interior Photos Marc Urbano|Car and Driver Despite the added stiffness, it’s clear from our initial track testing that the Raptor’s peak performance shines brightest off-road. The Ranger’s blocky BFG tires achieved a maximum lateral grip of 0.68 g on our skidpad and resulted in a stopping distance of 223 feet from 70 mph. However, these figures don’t fully capture the truck’s delightful daily-driving characteristics. Its impact-absorbing ride allows us to ignore Michigan’s numerous potholes. Ford also allows drivers to customize the Raptor’s personality, enabling independent adjustments to damping force, steering effort, powertrain response, and exhaust volume using buttons on the ergonomically shaped steering wheel. The “R” mode provides quick access to a saved profile, and the prominent paddle shifters allow for instant management of the 10-speed automatic transmission—a feature that is surprisingly missing from the Raptor’s competitors. This mid-size Raptor is no slouch, managing to keep pace with the 450-hp F-150 Raptor during the 0-to-60-mph acceleration test. During our initial run, the all-wheel-drive Ranger reached 60 mph in a quick 5.2 seconds, though the 405-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 felt less responsive during a 5-to-60-mph rolling start (5.8 seconds). The quarter-mile was completed in a respectable 13.9 seconds at 98 mph. No matter how light the throttle is, the baby Raptor is thirsty. The EPA estimates combined fuel economy at a disappointing 17 mpg, just one mpg better than the heavier V-6-powered F-150 Raptor. At least the Ranger Raptor met the government’s expectations on our real-world 75-mph fuel-economy test, with a previously tested model achieving a slightly less dismal 18 mpg on the highway. view interior Photos Marc Urbano|Car and Driver Our long-term 2026 Ford Ranger Raptor arrived at Car and Driver’s Ann Arbor headquarters just as spring was arriving. We’re only two months into the evaluation, and it has already accumulated over 4,000 miles. Besides some mixed feelings about its rough exhaust note, our staff seems quite impressed with Ford’s junior Raptor pickup. The Ranger’s perfect size makes it more appealing for everyday driving than our current long-term Ram 1500, and its cargo bed proves useful for quick and dirty tasks. We have plenty more planned for our new Raptor than just dropping off kids at school and hauling mulch. Ford’s “Assault School” is definitely on our radar, and we plan to purchase the Ford Performance tuner that will bring the baby Raptor’s power output essentially in line with its bigger brother. Plus, with the Silver Lake Sand Dunes only a few hours away, we’re eagerly anticipating the chance to get this truck off the ground.
