Introduction
The Volkswagen Golf R is a familiar presence in our testing fleet, but its transmission choice for 2026 has been the subject of considerable debate. Joining our long-term test fleet for 40,000 miles, this 2026 Golf R has generated some initial friction, largely due to its price and a transmission that remains the subject of both enthusiasm and criticism.
The Pricing Quandary
The most immediate hurdle with the 2026 Golf R is its base price, which sits at a rather lofty $50,730. We rarely leave a vehicle in its base configuration, and the Golf R is no exception. Our test vehicle features the Graphite Gray Metallic paint, a $455 option that blends in perfectly with the often-overcast skies of Ann Arbor as winter transitions into spring.
More significantly, we opted for the Euro Style package, priced at $3,795. This package reimagined the interior of the Golf R. While it did not include the much-speculated-about Gauloises cigarettes or Armani Exchange tracksuits, it did swap the standard black leather seats for a more comfortable configuration that features blue-plaid cloth inserts while retaining power adjustment and manual lumbar support. The door panels received a matching upgrade, and the package also deleted the panoramic sunroof and front-seat ventilation. In exchange, it adds an AkrapoviÄŤ titanium axle-back exhaust system. Purchasing this package brings the final window sticker to a substantial $54,980. For a Volkswagen performance hatchback, this is a significant investment.

Minor Updates, Major Changes
The 2026 model year brought several refinements to the Golf R. The engine gained 13 horsepower compared to the 2025 model, bringing the total output to 328 hp, while torque remains consistent at 295 lb-ft. The exterior received minor cosmetic updates, and the infotainment screen grew in size and capability. However, the biggest change from the 2025 model was the departure of the manual transmission, leaving the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) as the sole option. While we lament the loss of the manual, we appreciate having the Golf R in our fleet, even with the DSG.

Initial Impressions: The DSG Debate
The performance of the DSG transmission has been the primary focus of our initial testing. Even in the car’s most relaxed drive mode, the DSG behaves aggressively when lifting off the throttle, resulting in a sensation akin to a novice driver encountering a manual transmission for the first time. Increasing the aggressiveness in Sport mode exacerbates this lurching, which can only be mitigated through careful throttle control. We intend to explore whether any adjustments can be made to improve the experience.
The Missing Spare Tire
Another point of contention is the lack of a spare tire. The Golf R comes equipped only with an emergency inflation kit, which is far from ideal given our previous encounters with flat tires and the general condition of our state’s roads. The space between the cargo floor and the subwoofer beneath it is insufficient to accommodate even a compact spare. This has led us to consider carrying a fifth wheel and tire on longer journeys—not the most practical solution when passengers are involved.
Performance Testing
Despite the initial concerns, the Golf R performed admirably during our test track sessions. Mounted on 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza S005 summer tires, our Golf R achieved a launch-control-enabled 0–60 mph time of 4.0 seconds, with a 5–60 mph time of 5.1 seconds. The quarter-mile was completed in 12.5 seconds at 111 mph. Even in the rough March weather in Michigan, the Bridgestones allowed the Golf R to maintain 0.99 g of grip on the skidpad. Braking performance was solid, with 70–0 mph stops at 152 feet and 100–0 mph stops at 299 feet.
The lack of driving excitement in the region at this time of year has us eagerly awaiting warmer weather and the grip-enhancing, all-wheel-drive antics that await. It is also difficult to secure a replacement windshield, as ours is already cracked, but that is a story for our next update. Hopefully.
