The Next Wave of Electric Vehicles on the Horizon
While the EV landscape is currently defined by familiar names, the next few years promise a wave of innovative models from both established automakers and newcomers. These aren’t merely incremental updates; we’re talking about completely reimagined vehicles that redefine what’s possible with electric power. Let’s explore the most anticipated EVs slated to hit the market soon, spanning from performance-oriented sports cars to rugged off-roaders.
2026–2027: The Sprint to Market
The next two years will see a flood of launches, with several legacy manufacturers betting big on their next-generation electric platforms.
Alfa Romeo Giulia EV (Expected: 2028)
Alfa Romeo is undergoing a dramatic transformation, pivoting entirely to EVs. The iconic Giulia sedan is confirmed to return as a pure electric model, riding on the Stellantis STLA Large platform. This promises an 800-volt system for rapid charging and an estimated range of 500 miles. While rumors persist about a hybrid or ICE option, the primary focus is on performance, with power figures potentially exceeding 1,000 horsepower in the Quadrifoglio variant. The Alfa Romeo Giulia EV is a crucial model, as it will set the tone for the brand’s future and compete directly with premium performance sedans like the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron and BMW i5.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio EV (Expected: 2027)
Following closely behind the Giulia will be the all-electric Stelvio SUV. Sharing the same architecture and hybrid/EV powertrain options, the Stelvio aims to maintain the sporty handling that Alfa Romeo is known for, but in a higher-riding package.
Alpine EVs (Expected: 2030)
Alpine’s U.S. market entry has faced delays, but the brand is still committed to bringing electric sports cars to North America. After initial plans for the A390 crossover were revised, Alpine is now focusing on the upcoming A110 electric sports car and a larger SUV. However, the introduction of tariffs by the Trump administration has pushed this timeline back further, with the brand now expecting to enter the U.S. market around 2030.
Audi TT EV (Expected: 2027)
Audi is revitalizing its sports car lineup with an electric replacement for the iconic TT. Previewed by the radical Concept C, this new sports car will slot between the TT and R8 in terms of performance, ushering in a fresh design language. The concept features a return to physical controls, with an innovative screen that retracts completely when not in use. Audi plans to offer a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant to complement the rear-wheel-drive concept, with the production car targeting a weight of under 3,750 pounds. The Audi TT EV is a strategic move to capture buyers seeking premium performance and modern technology.
Bentley EV SUV (Expected: 2027)
Bentley’s entry into the EV market will be a luxury urban SUV, slated for release in early 2027. While referred to as “compact,” the SUV will still carry imposing proportions, measuring close to 200 inches in length. The EXP 15 concept car previews the Bentley EV’s styling, featuring a bold front end and a decadent interior. The electric SUV will likely share its platform with the upcoming Porsche Cayenne EV. Based on trademark filings, we anticipate the model will be named the Barnato, after one of Bentley’s influential racers from the 1920s.
BMW i3 (Expected: Late 2026)
BMW expands its electric lineup with the i3, an all-electric sibling to the 3-Series. Based on the Neue Klasse platform, the i3 features an 800-volt architecture that allows for 400-kW fast-charging. The 109-kWh battery is estimated to provide 440 miles of range. The launch trim, 50 xDrive, delivers 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. The interior is striking, with a thin display integrated into the base of the windshield and a trapezoidal central touchscreen. Sales of the BMW i3 are set to begin before the end of 2026.
BMW iM3 (Expected: 2027)
The upcoming BMW i3 will also spawn the first all-electric M3. The iM3, as we expect it to be called, will ride on BMW’s next-generation EV platform, featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture. A quad-motor powertrain, with two electric motors on each axle, should produce well over 600 horsepower. The front motors can be decoupled to increase highway range. BMW is also incorporating faux gearshifts and engine noises to enhance the driving experience, sampling a range of V8 and V10 engine sounds to find the perfect fit. The BMW iM3 will be a compelling option for buyers seeking the ultimate performance sedan without emissions.
BMW iX3 (Expected: Summer 2026)
The BMW iX3 arrives as an electric counterpart to the popular X3 SUV, featuring an unorthodox new design language with a thinner interpretation of the classic kidney grille. The iX3 will launch in the U.S. with a dual-motor variant producing 463 hp, enabling a 0–62 mph time of 4.9 seconds. The 109-kWh battery provides close to 400 miles of range and supports 400-kW fast-charging. The interior debuts a new dashboard setup, with a thin strip along the windshield serving as a 43-inch, full-width head-up display that replaces a conventional gauge cluster. A 17.9-inch touchscreen handles infotainment. Sales will commence in summer 2026.
BMW iX4 (Expected: 2027)
BMW is developing an electric replacement for the X4, the sleeker alternative to the X3 that features a sloping roofline. Expected to be called the iX4, the new coupe-SUV will feature exclusively electric powertrains and will be closely related to the iX3. The iX4 is also anticipated to spawn an M-branded performance variant. Production is rumored to begin in November 2026, with U.S. sales expected to start in 2027.
BMW iX5 (Expected: 2027)
BMW continues to electrify its lineup with the iX5, an electric counterpart to the mid-size X5 SUV. Instead of using the Neue Klasse platform underpinning the iX3, the iX5 will use an adaptation of BMW’s CLAR platform—currently found beneath the iX electric SUV—which will allow an updated gas-powered X5 to coexist with its electric sibling. The iX5 will feature a next-generation battery with better energy density. The electric SUV should be revealed in late 2026 and go on sale in the U.S. in 2027. BMW is also planning a version with a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain—co-developed with Toyota—that may become a reality before the end of the decade.
Caterham Project V (Expected: 2027)
Caterham, known for lightweight sports cars, plans to enter the U.S. market with the Project V, an electric coupe that will reach production in 2027. Powered by a 268-hp electric motor from Yamaha on the rear axle, the Project V features a unique split battery pack for optimized weight distribution. Caterham aims for a 0–62 mph time of under 4.5 seconds and a price tag of around $135,000.
Ferrari Luce (Expected: 2026)
Ferrari is gearing up for its first fully electric car, debuting in early 2026. Spy shots reveal a crossover-like profile with four doors, a 116.5-inch wheelbase, and a weight slightly less than 5,100 pounds. The Ferrari Luce will likely be incredibly expensive, featuring a quad-motor powertrain producing around 1,000 horsepower and a claimed 0–62 mph time of 2.5 seconds. Ferrari states the top speed will be 193 mph. The Luce will feature an 800-volt architecture and a 122-kWh battery with 350-kW charging capability. The European WLTP range is projected to exceed 330 miles, translating to around 280 miles in the U.S. The interior, designed by former Apple designer Jony Ive, features a clean, modern aesthetic.
Fiat Topolino (Expected: 2026)
Fiat will expand its diminutive EV lineup with the Topolino, which Fiat’s CEO has confirmed will come to the U.S. market. Measuring less than 100 inches long, with just 8 horsepower and a top speed of only 28 mph, the Topolino is classified as a Low Speed/Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (LSEV/NEV). The 5.5-kWh battery provides just 47 miles of claimed range. More details on Fiat’s plans should emerge in 2026.
Ford Mid-Size Truck (Expected: 2027)
Ford has announced plans for a new Universal EV platform that will spawn a range of vehicles, starting with a mid-size pickup truck. While the truck’s footprint will be closer to that of the compact Maverick, Ford claims
